Discussing Doonby: An Interview with Will Wallace

by Darius Wallace

Doonby is the powerful story of Sam Doonby, a handsome drifter who ends up in a small Texas town and finds work at a local bar, where his musical talents are discovered and are appreciated, but it also sets off a chain of events that could change his life and the lives of those in the town. Doonby will bring to audiences everywhere a value and purpose for life through its memorable characters, powerful plot, and inspirational settings.

I recently interviewed Will Wallace on his role in the film, the message he believes it sends, and his own Christian faith.

Darius: What is your role in the film?

Will: I play Tony, a small-town celebrity who plays music at the local bar. He is kind of like the big fish in the small pond. Soon, Sam Doonby comes into town and he becomes jealous of all of the popularity he receives for his musical talents.

Darius: What is it like on the set? Does it get frustrating sometimes?

Will: Tony is a bit of a darker character. Sometimes, the character that you play on the set can live within you as well and it kind of merges with you. But overall, I felt like it was a very wonderful cast and crew and I was very impressed with all of them. I teach acting classes in Los Angeles, and I have a lot of fun on set.

Darius: Do you get to travel a lot? Does it get to you sometimes?

Will: I travel all of the time. It's a part of the job. I am in Big Bear California, and I am really getting to see some beautiful scenery. But I also love being home. I really get to enjoy a beautiful view, and it is really amazing.

Darius: How does this film affect your Christian faith?

Will: I am a Christian. The story and the message in it really speaks to me. I'm nothing like the character that I play, but I am really pleased to share this message. I really feel like it is part of my Christian walk.

Darius: Does this film help you to grow in your faith?

Will: The message is something very specific and something that you can really believe in. A faith-based film like this helps you think about the message, especially the one in this film.

Darius: From the time you saw the script, did you know that this was a perfect role for you?

Will: Yes, I did. When the director approached me with the script and asked me for the role, I instantly knew that this was going to be something that I would enjoy. I read the script, and it was eerie. mysterious, and thought-provoking. And I had a feeling that it would be something very special.

Darius: The press release says that the past of one of the character’s past would come back to haunt him. Do you think that this film will help with some people who are struggling with this problem of the past coming back to haunt them?

Will: That's a very good question. I believe that after watching the film, many will come away with different interpretations of this subject. It is a very thought-provoking question. Some will leave with one view of the answer, and others will leave with another view.

Darius: What do you believe people who will go see this film get from it?

Will: I think that they will really see a message about the value of life. Many who will watch this film will definitely leave thinking and pondering over this subject.

Doonby is now in limited release at the Wynnsong 10 Theater in Chattanooga, TN, and will mark the first time the film will be seen by the general public before its nationwide release in the late spring of this year.
